Reading
Reading can be of different types and there are specific techniques to help the students develop the skill. If a teacher wants students to read aloud in order to check their pronunciation, he/she may give a model reading first. Then he will tell the students individually to read the text loudly. The teacher should listen carefully and correct the mistakes immediately. For developing intensive skills, the teacher should first give a model reading of the text and explain the meaning of difficult words.
Then he should ask the class to read the passage silently. He should instruct them to read carefully all the details as there would be questions afterwards. While the students are reading, the teacher may quietly walk around the class helping individual students, if necessary.
Questions
Start asking questions, and the questioning should be detailed and thorough, but the language should not be too difficult. In the lower classes, the teacher will ask for only factual information, but in upper classes, he should gradually go on to the more difficult questions. The questions should be directed to the whole class instead of to individual students. Extensive reading is a kind of reading we do for longer texts like short stories, magazine articles, or novels.
Since the main aim of extensive reading is not to study details but to get a general idea, the language of the books should be simple enough for the students so that they can read it easily, and the subject matter should be suitable for their age.
Reading skills
For developing extensive reading skills of the students, the teacher should first give a text to read, and then, instead of asking detailed questions, he/she should ask the students to give the gist of the passage or to say in a few sentences what the passage is all about. The reading material for extensive reading should be carefully chosen so that the students enjoy to reading it.
Simplified versions of adventure stories, science fictions, detective stories, stories of travel, lives of great men and women, etc., may be suitable for adolescent boys and girls. 82 For developing skimming and scanning, the teacher may tell the students to read a particular text, and then he/she can ask questions to the students. They will be asked questions based on different aspects of the text.
Teacher
The teacher can declare hat the student who finds the answer first will be the winner. As a result, there will be a competition among the students to be the first and they will be trying to read faster and faster. This will ultimately result in skimming and scanning.
Survey reading is another useful skill for the students. The teacher should teach the students how to handle books. properly. He may use different kinds of books to show them how to find out what the book about from its table of contents; when the required book is found, how to find out which page or pages contain the required information.
The chapter headings and the index generally give some hints. Some books give chapter summaries. These also give an idea about the contents of the chapters. The students should be shown these and taught to handle books efficiently.
